Official romance

The ‘official’ tag made by people in regard to relationships slightly confuses me. In fact, in my ignorance, I can almost go as far as to say I find it baffling.

Got a roving eye for a deal?

I don’t know about you, but the word official conjures up to me all sorts images to do with authority. It reminds me of what seems like an almost obsessive streak of being aware of what other people think of you when you first meet someone. As though people are peering through door holes whispering to one another, “Are they together? Will they last? Is it just a fling? Are they dating?”

Okay, I said it. Dating. Which, to be fair, does not seem to ring official in the officialdom of officialness, here and there and everywhere in the land of relationships.

Perhaps we need detail about the labels we give for dating, to take a relationship on to the next step as it were. But can you put an official tag on falling in love?

Maybe I am being feeble minded. After all, it is pretty obvious when two people who have started seeing one another might start to change their minds quite early on, going on different paths without so much as a blink. Yet then there are those who, after realising over time how much they have in common, also start to notice how much of their wavelength radars are swaying over the same horizon and quite naturally, become a couple.
One couple I am friends with reckon it is official when you both declare to one another the boyfriend/girlfriend tag, yet another pair I am friends with never really talked about any official tag when they first went out two years ago and are still together.

Official stamp of approval

One thing that is certainly official in my eyes however is romantic getaways in Leeds. Getting to know someone before you are ‘official’ and spending some quality time with them? Okay, I probably do officially get it now – commitment ought not to be a shallow entity and hey, each to their own.
