Making the Cut – Jarrolds, London

The Groupies have made yet another friend- meet Olivia from My New Favourite Thing – a blog about beauty, fashion and…well, more fashion. Our friends from Jarrolds gave Olivia a little taste of what they’re all about – read the review below.

Being exceptionally fussy at the best of times, not least when it comes to my hair, I was slightly apprehensive about placing my barnet in the hands of someone I didn’t know, at a hairdressers that I hadn’t heard of. I also happen to have been blonde forever, have obnoxiously misbehaving hair and am *whispers* a bit of a snob. All in all, a tricky customer. Some might say ‘nightmare’, I prefer ‘discerning’. Whichever way you look at it, Jarrolds, the hairdressers in question, had their work cut out for them. Which is why it was all the more impressive when I bounced out of their Old Street salon feeling fabulous and ready to take on the world. Well, at least take on W1 on a Saturday night.

Inside Jarrolds

On arrival, I was sat down and offered wine (always a good start), told there would be a slight delay and so was asked if I’d like a complimentary manicure. Alcohol and a free mani? Well played, girls, I didn’t even care what happened to my hair after that. The ladies looking after me were delightful; friendly and attentive but didn’t fuss over me and make me feel awkward. Ashleigh, my lovely stylist, patiently listened to my multiple neuroses about going darker and relatively dull hair life story, and eventually picked out some warm, honey-toned swatches for me to choose from. Nothing too drastic, just subtle low-lights that were perfect for winter and quite possibly exactly what my hair needed to get from dolly to demure.

When I said I hated the stripy highlights effect, she offered a solution of putting them in bottom-up. I was left impressed and without the shouty ‘I’ve just had my hair done!!’ blatantness which I can’t quite stomach. I was treated to a hand massage (these are vastly underrated – it was so lovely I almost fell asleep) and my nails were polished in a glossy red as I sat under the hairdryer catching up on the latest X Factor gossip. Who would possibly want to contend with the mosh pit of Oxford Street when you could do this on a Saturday afternoon instead?

I got a lovely manicure on top of everything else

Hair blow-dried into big, bouncy waves and sprayed with something delicious-smelling, I went on a hunt downstairs to get a feel for the rest of the place. Misleadingly large, there’s numerous rooms in the basement all beautifully decked out and replete with fluffy white towels, piles of luxurious looking beauty products and those little stone Buddha heads which are the mark of a top-notch beauty salon, as far as I’m concerned. It really is a one-stop shop; everything from tanning, spa treatments, hair and nails they’ve got it all covered, to a good standard for a great price. Now for the true litmus test: what will The Boy think?

“Have you had something done to your hair?” he asked suspiciously over dinner.

“Yep.”

“Looks nice.”

That’s extremely high praise, that is. Well done Jarrolds. I’ll be back soon!
