Pick of the Pop-Ups part 3 – Art and Design

We’re back with part three of our pop-up pieces! You’ve tucked into temporary restaurants, browsed through the best in one-off shopping – now it’s on to the pick of London’s pop-up art and design.

The Temporium

The Temporium, 221 Brompton Road, London SW3 2EJ. 9th-19th December

Online magazine Dezeen branch out from web to world next month, with the launch of a ten-day expo for all things design. The Temporium – strong contender for best pop-up name so far – will open for business on December 9th, bringing some of the UK’s most exciting and innovative brands under one roof. Stationary, homeware, jewelry and even lighting will feature. (We’re already excited about weird and wonderful tableware from Undergrowth Design, and Faye Toogood’s range of ‘quirky objects’). Get thee to the Brompton Road, design fans.

House of Voltaire

Upstairs at Rupert Sanderson, 19 Bruton Place, Mayfair, London W1J 6LZ, until 4th December

Shoe fans may have notice something afoot above Rupert Sanderson’s Mayfair store. Bruton Place has gone (temporarily) bohemian, with not-for-profit art collective Studio Voltaire in residence until 4th December. House of Voltaire (there’s contender number two) will sell edgy, contemporary works by artists supported by the Studio, and leading famous faces who back the scheme including Nicholas Bryne, Wolfgang Tillmans, Pam Hogg, and even Tracey Emin. With it’s Victorian Bond Street styling, the space alone is worth a look. Add prices starting at just £10, and a whisper that the names behind the stock will occasionally man the tills themselves, and House of Voltaire becomes unmissable.

Dainow&Dainow Art Sale

56-58 Leather Lane, London, EC1N 7TP

Dainow&Dainow began life as an online gallery for acclaimed architects, both professional and student alike. This month, they’re branching out via the pop-up wave, with a temporary art sale featuring limited edition prints of original drawings by their super-talented sources. Head down to Leather Lane for a glimpse of design future.

LCC and JaguarShoes Collective

LCC, Eckersley Gallery, Elephant and Castle, London, SE1 6SB

Pop-up mania takes an academic turn as the London College of Communication open a revolving art space in their Eckersley Gallery premises. First up in a planned series of collaboration will be the JaguarShoes Collective, a new body of cutting-edge creatives based near the cooler-than-cool East End bar of the same name. With artists, film-makers, designers and musicians involved, their residency is sure to kick off LCC’s pop-up proceedings in trendsetting style.

Tea & Make

Tea & Make, 3 Lewisham Way, New Cross, London, SE14 6PP

The crafty lovechild of stylist Sally Curtis and artist/curator Esther Yarnold, Tea & Make host events aimed at celebrating all things creative in local, homely settings. Their latest hub of hands-on artisan activity pops up in Lewisham from 27th November, with – well, tea. And making. All in a space specially kitted out by IKEA. With local artists and crafters invited to also share their wares, Tea & Make is a must for alternative Christmas shoppers and the nimble-fingered alike.
