Pick of the Pop-Ups Wraps Up – With a Very Special Announcement
Well, pop-up friends and fans, we’ve reached the end of our merry previewing road. From restaurants, to shops, via art and design, we’ve brought you a sneak peek at very best of London’s temporary scene.
Today, we’ll be wrapping up the series with a look at five weird and wonderful one-offs that are so unique, they can’t be categorised. At least not with anything other than: must be seen to be believed. Plus, we’ve got some VERY exciting news: We’ve decided to launch our very own POPUP SHOP, This weekend!
The Icecreamists
Self-styled ‘Sex Pistols of ice-cream’, The Icecreamists have taken the daddy of all desserts and shaved it’s head, thrown it in a ripped leather jacket and told it to stick to fingers to the man. Crash landing in two still-secret Covent Garden sites this winter, these gelato renegades combine traditional Italian ice cream know-how with a whopping dose of rock and roll. Described as ‘one-part Vivienne Westwood, one-part Hard Rock Boutique and one-part Alice in Winter-Wonderland’, theirs ain’t no ordinary ice cream parlour. If their 2009 Selfridges pop-up is anything to go by – where live bands, cat walking models and fantastical mixology shows were the norm – then their latest frozen lovechild ‘Lick Your Addiction’ promises to be something very special. Expect sensory overload from this guerrilla ice cream installation, where addicts can self-medicate with treats tipped toward the spectacular. Apparently ‘nitro-shots, transfusions, syringes, flames, cold sweats and a baby’s bottle’ will all feature… Follow The Icecreamists on Facebook and Twitter for more information. Take our word for it: Not. To. Be. Missed.
Theatre Delicatessen
Hot young performance company Theatre Delicatessen have been causing quite the cultural stir since popping up in residence within a derelict building behind Selfridges. Their ground-breaking installation Theatre Souk, in which a myriad of immersive plays were performed throughout the many rooms of their new home to wandering audience members, garnered rave reviews and caused the West End old guard to sit up and take notice of the young fire starter in their midst. Run by a team of upcoming directors and producers, Theatre Delicatessen showcases the very best of cutting-edge performance, providing a much-needed platform for other young talent from across the capital. Their current production of ‘A Christmas Carol’, a seasonal classic given a uniquely Delicatessen twist, makes the perfect alternative festive outing. Book now to avoid disappointment – Theatre Delicatessen is deservedly popular.
Fluid State
‘Experience curators’ The Tasting Sessions kick December off with a bang with Fluid State, the second of their annual food and drink festivals. Don’t be deceived by the downplayed description – this is a food fest unlike any other. Yes, it’s essentially about booze and bites, but with added performance, installations, music and more on offer over two nights, A Fluid State looks set to be an almighty mash-up of the culinary rulebook. This year, an 8000 square foot secret location in Central London will be transformed into a series of rooms, each with a different theme and focus. Expect Heston Blumenthal meets cabaret via interactive circus and you’re part way to picturing what’s in store. For those looking for something at a more relaxed hour, the festival closes with a special Sunday brunch where we’re told a Wallace and Gromit-style breakfast machine will churn out toast. A feast for all senses.
Counter Culture
Run by a team of young creatives tired of being told what’s cool, Counter Culture are mixing things up for 99 days in specially reclaimed space underneath London Bridge Station. With a line up of new, proudly different music, art, theatre, film and club nights – Jaguar Skills makes a guest appearance next month – and a commitment to reasonable prices, Counter Culture serves as a refreshing reminder of the vibrancy existing just beyond the mainstream. Good on you, underground friends.
And last but not least…

That’s right, folks – this Sunday, Groupon will be popping up at The Old Truman Brewery’s world-renowned Sunday Upmarket, on Brick Lane. And you can be a part of it all! Order a box of 6 cupcakes from top London patisserie Betty Blythe Fine Food Pantry today – see details below – then come down and say hello (and see how we’re getting on) when you pick them up. What’s more, you’ll be able to pick up a 50% off voucher for any ready-to-go salad, soup, sushi or stew at Chop’d just round the corner when you do – so that’s lunch all sorted.
