Pick of the Organic Beauty Products

It’s easy for me to remember to eat organic. I never pick up a carton of eggs, milk or a packet of chicken breasts without making sure that it’s local and free from chemicals, preservatives or anything else that might provoke a third head.

However, I do need a bit of prompting to think organic, clean and green when I’m jumping in the shower or getting ready for a night out – so for this winter, I’m putting myself on a strict organic beauty regime.

Down with chemical coverup! No mascara without morals!!

Luckily enough, in today’s eco-marketplace, there’s a growing brigade of organic-only makeup brands to help me out. Free from parabens, sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate and other things I can’t pronounce OR point out on the periodic table, these products are kinder to my chapped winter skin as well as to animals and the environment.

NVEY (pronounced NaVay), an Australian company, has been selling gentle organic makeup on these shores for a few years. Two huge pluses for me with this brand: being a pale, pasty Brit (even after 5 years in LA!), I’m always searching for effective blushers, and NVEY has a silky soft version incorporating essential oils for that rosy flush.

Secondly, NVEY come recommended by Oprah – and frankly, that’s all I need to know.

Last week I was lucky enough to head to supper club entrepeneur Ms Marmite Lover’s Christmas market, and watched in awe as Kitchen Jezebel – another home chef who suffers from allergies to perfumes – demonstrated how to make home-made makeup from simple pantry products. Pans bubbled with creams and oils on the stove – a beauty Blue Peter in action! For truly organic makeup, sometimes it’s easier (and cheaper!) to hit the kitchen…

For those who prefer their make-up pre-made, La Bella Donna’s, whose range of mineral makeup is beloved by supermodel Lily Cole. It also offers non-chemical SPF protection from the sun – which I’ll be taking as a sign I should book a tropical winter holiday immediately.

Organic Surge bathroom products, from shampoos to luxury bubblebaths, give me a warm and fuzzy feeling – and not just as I sink into a hot bath after trudging the snowy streets. Set up by founder Alan McKenzie, each product sold by the company sends funds to Africa – creating educational scholarships in schools, helping the Kenya Children’s Home Orphanage in Kenya and supporting the Watoto children’s charity in Uganda. With so much to be thankful for this year, it’s a great feeling to be able to treat myself and contribute to charity at the same time.

Here’s to entering the new year a more beautiful, fragrant and ethical me – starting with today’s great Groupon deal on Organic Surge products!
