Top Tips On Making The Perfect Coffee

Say hi to Alex, our new coffee-loving foodie friend! Alex says he “literally couldn’t live without coffee”, and he’s here to share his tastebud-ticking discoveries…

Ah coffee, glorious coffee. Who’d be without it? It’s a good thing you don’t have to be. There are a ton of little gadgets on the market that tend to your every coffee loving need. Whether you’re an espresso purist, or a lover of the lattes, there’s a tool to help you make the best. So here’s a collection of the ingredients you need for that perfect coffee every time.

The bean grinder

It’s fact that coffee is at its best when it’s just been ground. That’s why all the top high street shops grind it on the spot. So leave your grinding as close to brewing as possible, or get the stuff that’s nicely air locked so that nasty oxygen doesn’t eat up all that lovely flavour. If you want to grind your own get yourself a Krups Coffee Mill. It’s inexpensive at around £15 and looks pretty nifty on your worktop too.

The presso

The Presso is a revelation (this blogger uses one daily!). It makes coffee with the boiled water from your kettle and needs no electricity. You provide the pressure to push the water through (the key ingredient for the perfect espresso) and produce a top notch java treat every time. It’s not hard to see why it’s an award winner, with its very stylish stainless steal design. And at approximately £90, it won’t break the bank either. No home should be without one.

The desktop coffee maker

There’s a lazy coffee drinker in all we coffee fanatics. Sometimes you just want a hit without having to move. Good news: Firebox has a lovely bit of kit that lets you pop in your ground coffee, add some hot water and make yourself your favourite brew without having to leave your desk. Coffee-lazy-licious!

The Handpresso

OK, so this little beauty gets top marks for novelty. You can quite literally be absolutely anywhere with the Handpresso. This hand-held device is no bigger than most wine bottle openers. It’s certainly a show stopper and surely the most effective way to ensure you’re never without your caffeine fix.

The phenomenal beans

Now we’re getting down to brass tacks. You can have all the gadgets and gizmos in the world, but if your beans are rubbish, you’ve got a problem. Tastes vary wildly depending on where particular coffee beans come from in the world. Columbian coffees are traditionally held in high regard, and Kenyan beans are popular too. But it’s about trial and error and playing to your own tastes. The Real Coffee Co have a wonderful ‘Roast and Post’ offer so that you have easy access to one of the widest choice of coffees there is. And if you want their lovely coffee today (December 21, 2010), there’s a coffee-lovers Groupon deal on today!

So, that’s your lot. The ultimate in making great coffee. What gadgets do you use to get the perfect cup?
