Saving London’s Historic Music Hall Past

One of the sad truths about living in our great city is the fact that places you love change, move and simply shut down.

Here at Groupon, we love nothing more than unique and unmissable venues and experiences – which is why we’re so sad to hear that one of our favourite spots might be in danger.

When historical and well-loved buildings and venues close down, it’s enough to bring a tear to the eye – which is why the fight to save Shadwick’s beloved Wilton’s Music Hall has been gathering momentum among art, music and theatre lovers alike.

Wilton’s Music Hall is the oldest surviving music hall in the world – and one of London’s best kept secrets. Originally opened in 1858, it’s survived two world wars and been everything from a rag warehouse to a Mission.

These days, Londoners in the know visit for drinks, live theatre, magic and everything in-between. On any given night, you can join a bridge masterclass, watch stand-up comedy greats trying out new material or listen to live vintage music in the bar. It’s also been the setting for some unforgettable film backdrops, including Robert Downey Junior’s Sherlock Holmes.

Inside, it’s a wonderland of plush faded velvet and crumbling brick. I’ve spent many nights simply wandering happily from room to room, and their popular guided tours are the best way to see this old dame of London theatreland in all of her chipped beauty.

Already standing on creaky ground and in desperate need of repair, Wilton’s is struggling for survival after being turned down by the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant. Recently launching a fundraising campaign, they are refusing to give up and showing that Blitz spirit that kept the hall standing all these years.

Music halls are a dying breed,” said Frances Mayhew, Director of Wilton’s. “Kids see their first shows here – it means a lot to the community.”

We’re planning everything from comedy film nights to avant-garde puppet shows in the next few months, and we’ll be fundraising with the public’s help.
Where else could you take part in a Victorian séance, play ping pong on stage or watch a free movie – all in the same month?

It’s time to get involved London! Visit Wilton’s Music Hall for any of their amazing upcoming shows or donate to the cause at http://www.justgiving.com/wiltons/donate and save one last London jewel from extinction.

I love being at Wiltons – one of my favourite places to visit, whether it be enjoying a quiet drink in Graces Alley, chatting with friends in the magnificent Mahogany Bar or watching a show in the musical hall itself. Great place with a fantastic atmosphere and deserving of all our love, support and spending! Long live Wiltons.
