How to Combat Monday Morning Blues

You’ve all been formally introduced to this lady (Carly) before, but as we haven’t heard from her in a while, we thought we would introduce her again! Carly is one of our guest bloggers this week, and she has 5 tips to wade through those sour feelings on a Monday morning. Thanks Carly! And Archie (Carly’s dog)!

Hi, I’m Carly, an avid blogger that tweets far too much. In my spare time I run a funky website about silicone bakeware and I look after my lovely Miniature Schnauzer, called Archie. I love cupcakes, baking, the Internet, SEO, online marketing, tulips, going for walks, the colour pink, fairy lights and cups of tea!

It feels like the weekend is over before it even started, as tomorrow morning is the start of a new week.  And that means there’s five whole days until your next lie in…  Depressing, isn’t it?

Well, actually no, it doesn’t need to be.  Try following our little guide and you can battle those Monday morning blues in advance.

Make Monday mornings your new Friday afternoons! Here’s how:

Tip 1:  Make Monday your treat day:

If you usually save that sinful cake or high-calorie takeaway for a Friday change things around a bit and have it on a Monday instead.  It makes more sense as Fridays are already the best day of the working week!

As you sit on the bus or tube on a Monday morning dreading another week of working, knowing that your favourite treat is only a couple of hours away will make all the difference.  We promise!

Alternatively, if you’re a genius in the kitchen, use your Sunday afternoons to bake delicious treats to share around on Monday afternoon.  Click here for some fun recipes.

Tip 2: DIY office / desk make over:

I’m guessing that you don’t work in one of the 6 coolest offices in the world?  If your desk or office space is more on the grey, depressing and drab side, then no wonder you’re not looking forward to sitting at it for the next five days.

Brighten the space up by giving it a mini makeover.  Choose some bright and fun picture frames or prints and compliment them with exotic-looking fake plants (easier to maintain) in big colourful vases.

Places to shop:

Ikea – there’s always loads of fab colourful pots and vases

Habitat – sleek designs and lots of colour, plus a sale too!

Blooming Artificial – lots of fun, exotic fake plants

Remove all of your clutter by sticking everything into some plastic storage boxes.  Throw everything (old paperwork, books you hardly look at and stationary you rarely use) into the box and then slot this under your desk.  And voila!  A de-cluttered workspace is a happy workspace!

Finally, have a go at injecting some fun into your office stationary.  Choose novelty pieces like cheerful looking tape dispenser or this heart shape hole punch.  If you find a novelty stapler to match, suddenly all of that Monday morning filing won’t seem too bad…

Tip 3: Think ahead on Friday afternoons

Although you’ll probably have that ‘Friday feeling’ come 4.30pm, don’t think “I’ll leave it until Monday”.  Instead, stick it out for another half hour and finish off those annoying tasks before you leave.  You’ll find that it really pays off.  You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and really enjoy your weekend, instead of worrying how you’ll fit everything in come Monday morning.

Tip 4: Have an extra lie in on a Monday:

Who wouldn’t like a lie in on Monday morning? Well, it really is possible!  On Sunday evening spend a little bit of time preparing a packed lunch, shaving, showering, ironing and even packing your bag.

Ladies: wash your hair on Sunday evening and blow-dry before bed.  In the morning you can quickly run your straighteners over it and voila!

Aim to be out of bed, ready and straight out of the door in half the time it usually takes, that way you can spend the extra time having a snooze!

Tip 5: Look for a new job, or a new challenge:

If you really hate Monday mornings (and come to think of it, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings too) perhaps you need a change of job.  Maybe it’s not Mondays that are the problem, but your work environment?  Think about what would make you happy and take the plunge: a year out of work travelling?  A university course? A new position at a different company? A new challenge may be just what you need.  Who knows, then you may start to enjoy Monday mornings?

  2. Early morning wake up. Shame tahat Habitat will be close. New chalange: Tuesday interview. Wishing you and mysekf, too nice Monday!

  3. Anna, good news! Habitat has been bought out by the owners of Argos & Homebase, that’s why I included it in the article! They have also purchased 3 shops in London, the website & all the rights to the designs (I think I’ve remembered that correctly!) I think they’ll still ship products from the website, but I wonder if this means we’ll be able to buy habitat items in Argos & Homebase now too? That could be cool!

Great tips Carly and I love the cute office supplies! I totally agree about finishing off the annoying tasks on the Friday too – I do it all the time.

I don’t get this since I semi-retired and got writing. It is a great mood lifter. Just sit and write anything however daft.

Adrienne Dines at the Novel Writing Weekend run by Winchester Writers’ Conference suggested writing a ‘rant’ – be as angry about something as you can. Not difficult since last week’s riots don’t you think.
