Felt Brooch

This is a really simple tutorial showing you how to make a felt brooch, whether it is to brighten up your winter coat or for a Christmas present. Just follow these steps.

Felt Brooch

What you will need:

  • Different coloured felt
  • Brooch pin – available in any haberdashery
  • Embroidery thread and needle
  • Glue gun or superglue
  • Assortment of buttons
  1. First of all decide what shape brooch you want to make. Then you need to choose the felt colours and cut out the shapes according to the size you want to brooch to be. I cut out some circle shaped pieces.

  2. And also some heart shaped pieces

  3. Next you need to choose your thread. I have chosen to do blanket stitch for the blue heart, here is how you do it:

  4. Thread the needle and knot the end, then insert the needle from the back of the heart and pull it through to the front
  5. Next insert the needle to the left of where the thread is coming out of the front and pull so the thread has a small loop (see photo)

  6. For the next stitch, pull your needle through the loop from the back to the front. Pull this stitch and the subsequent stitches tight so the vertical bar is straight up and down and continue round the heart.

  7. For the smaller heart I have used a simple running stitch, using the same colour thread.

  8. Once you have finished this sew the button you have chosen onto the small heart.

  9. Then sew the brooch clasp onto the back of the large heart (you will be sticking the small heart onto the front of the large heart so you can tie the knot here as it will be hidden)

  10. Finally, glue the small heart onto the front of the large heart.

If you dont want to make a heart design, why not try a simple circle design in Autumnal colours?

And there you have it; two simple to make yet stylish brooches to give you winter attire that much needed touch of colour!
