Make Your Own Bath Bombs

I know this going to be a predictable post from me this week, I mean look around you – you are likely surrounded by tinsel and Christmas trees decorated with shiny balls and fairy lights and everywhere you walk you hear Christmas carols…If I hear those sleigh bells jinglin’- ring-ting-tinglin’ one more time I might explode!

In the back of my mind I have that nervous feeling; there are 3 days left, I haven’t done all my Christmas shopping yet, I’m running out of ideas, and money! Every year I find it harder and harder to select new and exciting gifts for all the members of my family and this year has been no different.

So I’ve thought long and hard about how to get round this and still give a gift that will thrill and delight the person receiving it. I think the way forward is giving handmade gifts. So I thought I would share and teach you all how to make your very own homemade bath bombs!

Homemade Bath Bombs

The basic recipe requires the following ingredients most of which you will already have in your cupboard at home or if not you will definitely be able to buy this stuff at the supermarket.

What you will need:

  • 2 parts baking soda
  • Witch hazel
  • Colouring of your choice
  • 1 part citric acid
  • Fragrance oil (pick one the recipient will like)
  • A mould of any shape you like (maybe a Christmas themed)

Directions:

  1. Mix together the baking soda and citric acid. Make sure you mix everything really well because if you don’t your bomb won’t be…the BOMB! Perhaps use a food processor or mixer if you have one.
  2. Next add your colour – dye pigments will work best but try not to add too much because the colour will brighten once the witch hazel is added.
  3. Add your fragrance again remember the rule ‘less is more’ so just a few drops will do….don’t add the whole bottle of oil!
  4. The last thing you need to do is also the most difficult part of the process, add your witch hazel slowly while stirring your mixture together once you feel the mixture harden or stick together get it into the moulds quickly and fill the moulds. If you wait too long at this point it will harden in your mixing bowl and that will not be a pretty gift for your mum! And if you add too much witch hazel it will be too wet and the bath bomb will start fizzing away in your bowl and you’ll have to start again!
  5. Once you have put your bombs in their moulds leave them until they are firm then take them out and let the air dry for a few hours and then you can package them up in cellophane bags and give them to all your family and friends for a unique Christmas gift that they will love!

Enjoy making these bath bombs for your friends and family, and be sure to make some for yourself as well! Have a good Christmas everyone!
