Do This Or Regret It: My Weekly Dose Of Capital Culture (Week 3)
I hope you enjoy this week’s recommendations of Capital Culture!

ART: David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture, Royal Academy, Until April
One of the big shows of the season opens this weekend. The Bigger Picture explores Hockney’s return to East Yorkshire – after years spent in LA – with a series of huge, multi-panelled paintings depicting the landscapes of his childhood. Tirelessly innovative, the 74 year old great is also experimenting with new technology; including enlargements of work made on his iPad. Not to be missed,
MUSIC: Nat Baldwin and Halo Halo, Cargo, Monday January 23rd
Upset The Rhythm present (yet another) unmissable evening of glorious noises. Dirty Projectors’ Nat Baldwin headlines, armed with a Double Bass a gently trilled falsetto. Trained by free jazz legend Anthony Braxton his heartfelt love songs are realised with fervent experimentalism. Formidable support comes from the intriguing London trio, Halo Halo. Fusing Appalachian folk with Sinawi pop, their sound is anchored by pivot shifting beats.

THEATRE: Guys & Dolls, The Gatehouse, Until Sunday January 29th
Racky Plew’s incredibly well received production of Guys & Dolls combines stripped back staging with inventive choreography and raucously realised romance. The1950′s Broadway hit is intimately set in traverse, pulling the wise-cracking wit into sharp focus. A dazzling re-interpretation of a well-loved classic!
FILM: Secret Cinema, Secret Location, Until Sunday January 22nd
I recommended this at the beginning of last month, now this is you last opportunity to catch it. Secret Cinema is an enticingly hush hush venture from the wonderful Future Cinema. On a mission to change the way we watch film, Secret Cinema create an immersive event around the film – allowing the audience to inhabit the world of the film, engaging with online pre-narratives and offline experiences. The twist? The location and the film are kept top secret until the celluloid rolls. In the words of the creators: “Secret Audience. Secret locations. Secret Worlds. Whisper only amongst yourselves. Keep the motion. Tell-no one.” Beg , borrow or steal a ticket…and get guessing.

WILDCARD: Scott’s Last Expedition, Natural History Museum, Until Sept
The Natural History Museum’s first major exhibition of 2012 opens this weekend, commemorating the centenary of Scott’s historic expedition. Instances of incredible endurance and scientific achievement are paralleled with haunting explorations of loss – an outstanding start to the museum’s year. Do This Or Regret It!
