Do This Or Regret It: My Weekly Dose Of Capital Culture (Week 5)

Another week, another dose of Capital Culture.

THEATRE: The Importance Of Being Earnest, The Theatre Royal Haymarket, Until 11th Feb

After an acclaimed run at The Old Red Lion in Islington, Oscar Wilde’s comedy of manners (and errors) transfers to the West End for just 15 performances. I was lucky enough to catch the show in its original venue and am delighted with the opportunity to see it again: an elegantly realised production, featuring razor sharp performances. It’s wonderfully ridiculous.

MUSIC: Balam Acab + oOoOO + Holy Other + Karenn, A Secret London Location, Saturday 4th Feb

The achingly cool record label – Tri Angle – host a showcase in a secret London location this weekend, featuring performances from Balam Acab, oOoOO, Holy Other and Kareen. Founded by 20 Jazz Funk Greats’ Robin Carolan, the label releases a woozy mix of witch house via shoe-gaze. Carolan describes his output as “like a witching-hour vision of Cocteau Twins dream pop, meshed with the soundtrack to a particularly angsty GreggAraki film full of Gen X shoegazer atmospherics and industrial beats, brought bang up to the date by the influence of raw hip-hop mutations like chopped and screwed and juke.” Like I said: pretty, darn, cool. The event also features a DJ set from The xx’s Romy.

ART: David Shrigley: The Brain, The Hayward Gallery, Until 13th May

The fabulous David Shrigley (finally) steps into the limelight, with the UK’s first ever survey of his work. His leftfield text-and-image pieces on paper will be exhibited, alongside drawings, paintings, photographs, sculpture and animated films. A unique presentation of twisted observations: unmissable.

FILM: Groundhog Day, The Prince Charles Cinema, Monday 6th Feb

Bill Murray shines as Phil Conners – an egocentric weather man – in Harold Ramis’ cult classic. Based on a story by Danny Rubin, the film tells Conner’s tale, as he inexplicably begins living the same day again, and again, and again. A hilarious screenplay combined with the inimitable brilliance of Murray. I can’t wait.

WILDCARD: International Student Film Festival – London, London College of Communication, 3-5th Feb

A three day festival of workshops, panel discussions and screenings is concentrating on young emerging filmmakers from around the world. It aims to bring together musicians, filmmakers and mavericks to spread the joy amongst a range of film inspired fun events from midnight games to live scores – there will be something for everyone. Do this – or regret it!
