Globetrotting in High Heels: Let’s Talk Romance

With Valentine’s Day coming up I thought I’d help all those petrol station flower givers out there with a romantic run down of the top four most romantic places in Europe. Feel free to add your favourite romantic travel spots in the comments below!

River Seine, Paris

Paris is a bit of a cliché when it comes to romance, but with good reason. There’s no denying that it’s one of the most romantic cities in the world. However, although the top of the Eiffel Tower is a favourite proposal spot (one that my own husband chose), I’m not sure that it’s the most romantic location in the city. Sure, the views are stunning, but if you don’t have the best head for heights (like my poor husband) then it can send you a not so fetching shade of green. It can also be dreadfully crowded, and standing in a queue for an hour prior isn’t the most conducive start to a romantic experience.

A safer bet is a cruise down the Seine to take in the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame, Paris Town Hall, the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde from the river. If you want to really push the boat out a dinner cruise will let you take in the sights at night, while relaxing over a meal and wine.

Charles Bridge, Prague

This beautiful gothic bridge in Prague connects the enchanting Old Town with the Mala Strana, and makes for a truly romantic stroll. With Prague castle in the background and the wide Vtava River beneath, the Charles Bridge is perfectly placed to take in magnificent panoramic views of this charming olde-worlde city.

Trevi Fountain, Rome

Another cliché for good reason is the Trevi Fountain in Rome. One of the most beautiful fountains in Europe, the intricacy of the monument is astounding. For the ultimate romance factor, try to visit out of season when the area will be less crowded and you’re less likely to encounter the obligatory vendors, beggars and touts. After all, nothing quite spoils a romantic moment than a man dressed up as a Gladiator trying to flog you a photo opportunity.

While in the area make sure that you toast the special occasion with a gelato from San Crispino’s nearby. Acclaimed as the best ice-cream in Rome, it’s perfect for sharing with a loved one (just make it a large!).

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Now I must confess to have never actually been to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland but it is definitely a destination at the very top of my wish list. The combination of freezing cold air (and stunning backdrop) with the steaming, vast, blue waters seems extra-ordinarily romantic to me and I’d be extremely happy should my husband decide he wants to whisk me away there for Valentines.
