Winter Workout Wear to Beat the Big Freeze

As ‘Britain’s Big Freeze’ covered most of the country with snow, frigid temperatures, and torturous travel conditions this weekend, getting out for a good workout probably was not on the top of most people’s list. But exercise doesn’t end just because the thermometer hits negative digits.

In an attempt to fight back against old man winter, I’ve found the right pieces to keep you warm- but not too warm- during a wintry workout. There is no such thing as bad weather when it comes to exercise – just bad clothing!

Let’s start from the top- your head. Scientists have debunked the myth that 40-45% of your body heat is lost through your head, but on cold days, extremities such as your ears do suffer from extreme temperatures. If you tend to get hot during your workout, opt for an ear-band made of wicking fabric. A fleece hat is a cozier option. For those really cold, windy days, try a balaclava. Look for the one by Manzella – it’s really hardcore; or a cozy multi-use tubular headscarf like the ones from Trigirl.

Consider your torso your temperature-regulating command centre. Keeping your torso warm is the key to a comfy winter workout, but overdo it and your workout will suffer. Think layers. A base-layer should be lightweight and form-fitting – its job is to pull any moisture away from your body to keep you dry and comfy. If it’s really cold, another medium-weight layer goes next; again, this should be wicking, but should be less fitted. A zipper at the neck will also help to regulate your body temperature; keep it zipped until you warm up and then loosen up a little! Next is your outer layer, which should be a breathable and windproof shell. A front zip is key for temperature control, but many have underarm zippers to help ventilate further- something you may not need starting your workout, but may be glad to have 20 minutes in!

Your legs will probably not get as cold as other areas, but it’s still a good idea to protect them from winter wind and chill. If you prefer a lighter Lycra layer this is probably enough, but for colder days, a nice brushed lining adds to Lycra’s warmth factor. Gore offers great breathable options for men and women.

Don’t forget your hands and feet! They get less blood flow and need protection to keep you warm and happy. Hands do tend to heat up the longer you work out, so convertible mittens are a versatile best bet. I love mine from Saucony- the mittens keep me warm for the first half of my run; I flip them back and keep on the gloves to keep my fingers protected but cooler for the second half. And for your feet, make sure to wear technical socks (not cotton!) to wick away moisture. Some of the best technical socks for winter have a high wool content- keeping your feet dry and toasty in some of the worst conditions.

Other bonus items to help complete your winter kit? Arm-warmers are a good option for flexibility- start your run, ski, or ride wearing the warm, brushed Lycra tubes as your innermost layer, roll them down when you warm up (or take them off and store in the pocket of your outer shell). They fold up so small and light, you won’t even notice them. And for an icy walk or run, try Yaktrax, non-slip ice grips for your shoes. Like chains for car tyres, these easy-on, easy-off coils help to create traction and avoid slipping on icy, snowy winter paths.

It would be just as easy to crawl back into bed or bore yourself with yet another class at the gym this winter, but why? There’s a beautiful, snowy world out there beckoning- gear up and get out there!

p.s If you’ve ever had a bad experience in the snow then you’ll know what it’s like to be caught short without the right supplies. With the way the weather has been over the past few days or so I’d definitely recommend you head over to Groupon and get this Winter Survival Car Kit for £19.99 from SnocoMotoring.co.uk (58% off). It’s definitely something worth keeping in your car, especially with our unpredictable weather; and if you do have to drive in the snow it is important to be safe – something you can’t really put a price on!
