Do This Or Regret It: My Weekly Dose Of Capital Culture (Week 6)
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, this week’s recommendations are sure to win your sweetheart’s affection. Granted, an exhibition of paintings by apes and elephants may not be the conventional celebration of romance; but who wants conventional anyway? Forget flowers and chocolates…

ART: Art By Animals, Grant Museum Of Zoology, Until March 9th
Art by animals is just that: an exhibition of paintings by elephants and apes, alongside a fascinating study exploring the potential artistic merit of the images, including animal specimens and historical documentation.
FILM: The Flicker Club, Old Vic Tunnels, 10th – 26th February
The Flicker Club present a wonderfully terrifying series of screenings, in association with Hammer – the legendry house of horror. Cult favourites will play out alongside contemporary classics – from The Reptile, Frankenstein Created Woman and The Vampire Lovers; to Wake Wood, Let Me In and Woman In Black. The screenings will also feature readings from surprise special guests – and it all takes place in the suitably atmospheric Old Vic Tunnels.

MUSIC: Tennis, Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, Monday February 13th
Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley met whilst studying Philosophy at college. They got married, spent seven months on a sailing expedition and formed a band to document their adventures – the gloriously languid, deliciously dreamy Tennis. The pair return to the capital this week, ahead of the release of their second album “Young & Old” on Tuesday. Expect ’60s infused pop, drenched in synths and a lo-fi sensibility.
THEATRE: The Furies, Old Vic Tunnels, 9th – 12th February
I first saw The Furies during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in a packed and sweaty room above a vegan café, in the middle of the night. As one might deduce from such circumstances: this is not your typical theatrical production. Birmingham’s Kindle Theatre present a radical working of the story of Clytemnestra, told via an all-female band of microphone wielding Furies. With the attitude and aesthetics of a heavy metal gig, expect violent crashes, gut-wrenching vocals and bone-shaking bass.

WILDCARD: My Funny Valentine, Theatre Royal Haymarket, Tuesday February 14th
A wonderful alternative to the gooey eyed romance of Valentine’s Day, the Old Red Lion present a night of comedy at the beautiful Theatre Royal Haymarket. Stephen K. Amos headlines – an incredible comedian, possessor of a razor sharp wit alongside a glint of cutting mischief. I can’t wait.
